York to Scarborough is one of the simplest journeys on this site: a single TransPennine Express train, no change, 49 minutes, with three stops on the way.
The train also beats the car. Driving the A64 is 40 miles and takes about 70 minutes, so rail saves around twenty minutes before you have even looked for somewhere to park in Scarborough.
On the weekday timetable we checked there were 18 departures from York for Scarborough. From 07:10 until 21:10 they left at ten or eleven minutes past every hour, a pattern simple enough to carry in your head. The earliest departure we found from York ran at 06:18, and the two latest ones broke the rhythm, at 22:28 and 23:05. The quickest run took 48 minutes, so on speed there is nothing to choose between them.
Because the service is hourly rather than half-hourly, missing a train by a minute costs you the best part of an hour in York. For a day trip it pays to decide in advance which of the ten-past departures you are aiming for, and to be at the station a few minutes before it.
Those two late trains make an evening in York before travelling on more practical than it is on many routes. The 23:05 still gets into Scarborough just before midnight, and the 22:28 well before it.
Scarborough station is about 820 metres from Newborough in the town centre, which is roughly an eleven-minute walk. Add those eleven minutes to the 49 on the train and York to the middle of Scarborough comes to about an hour, as long as you time your arrival at York for a departure.
Journey times and changes below come from the rail and bus timetables for Tuesday 1 December 2026. Weekend and holiday timetables differ, so check the day you travel.
