Newcastle to Scarborough by Train

By Scarborough Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

There is no direct train from Newcastle to Scarborough, but the one change is an easy one. TransPennine Express or LNER takes you from Newcastle to York in 59 minutes, and a TransPennine train does the rest in 49. Each leg makes three stops, and the whole journey comes to just under two hours.

The change at York

The wait at York was around ten minutes on a typical run in the weekday timetable we checked, and about seven on the quickest, which took 1h 55m from Newcastle to Scarborough. Ten minutes is not a lot of slack, so if the Newcastle train is badly delayed, expect to wait for the next hourly Scarborough departure from York.

When to leave Newcastle

Connecting departures from Newcastle ran about hourly from 04:35 to 21:58, mostly at two minutes past the hour; the 07:04 and 20:04 left a little later in their hours. That is 18 departures across the day, so missing one at Newcastle costs you about an hour rather than the trip. The 21:58 was the latest departure on that timetable and, on its typical time, reaches Scarborough a little before midnight. At the other end of the day, the 04:35 is in Scarborough at about 06:33.

Two slower combinations, changing at Leeds or at Sunderland and York, appeared early in the day and took close to three hours. Neither is worth it while the York connection runs.

Driving is slower than the train. The route by the A19 and A171 is 91 miles and around 2h 7m, about ten minutes more than a typical rail journey.

Once there, Newborough in the town centre is around 820 metres from Scarborough station, which takes about eleven minutes to walk.
